Time Spec: Military Watch Markings – Deciphering the Code
However, long before that, owner Denis Carignan was repairing watches as a hobby. It all began when he found an old pocket watch while antiquing. He was amazed by the craftsmanship and became captivated by what is known as horology. Over the years, we have repaired and restored thousands of timepieces.
Glossary of Pocket Watch Parts & Terminology Over the last few centuries, Pocket Watches have developed a language all of their own. It can be a bit daunting when confronted with a sheaf of information about a watch, only half of which makes sense.
I’ve got a pretty old Omega pocketwatch here that belonged to my great grandfather, and I just wanted to determine roughly how old is it, and if there’s anything notable about this piece. It has quite a few unusual characteristics. It’s a silver hunter-style case, except there are two “lids” my apologies if I’m using the wrong terms: The dial has no Omega logo, just the word Omega.
It could be a lacquered dial. Most hunter-style pocketwatches I’ve seen have the hinge at 6 and the crown at I have a feeling the hands aren’t original, given that they don’t match each other, and aren’t in proportion to the dial and subdial. Flipping the other lid reveals what seems to be some sort of commemorative engraving I don’t speak French. A close up of the three, er, awards, dated , , and , for Paris, Geneva, and Brussels, respectively: A poor Google translation of the writing underneath: I have no idea what they stand for.
Pretty unadorned, except for some really elaborate engraving near, er, a regulator? A small Omega logo is stamped on the inner surface of both “lids”. A crown is also stamped under each lid.

The new Khaki Field Mechanical is a faithful recreation of its original s forebear and is true to Hamilton’s military heritage. Inspired by the military, built to last, this is the original soldier’s watch.
After two decades it remains virtually unchanged since its introduction. Very few watches could gain an iconic status in such a short time frame. But what is the path that brought to the ideation and development of the Lange 1? The origins of the Saxon manufacturer date back to , when Ferdinand A. Lange, an extraordinarily talented Dresden watchmaker, established his own company and started creating superior pocket-watches highly coveted among collectors all over the world.
In order to make a successful return, it was essential to present to the world something truly unique and special, a timepiece that could surprise and receive unanimous support from watch experts. The big question was: For the creation of the signature watch of A. Lange and Sohne, they thought to give it a strong and unique identity by adopting an outsize date indication which was inspired to the Five-Minute Clock of the Semper Opera House in Dresden, a revolutionary clock with digital indication dating back to

History of watches The first timepieces to be worn, made in 16th-century Europe, were transitional in size between clocks and watches. They were heavy drum shaped brass cylinders several inches in diameter, engraved and ornamented. They had only an hour hand.
Brandt, 23 years old, began by hand assembling watches from parts produced by local craftsmen. By , Louis Brandt and Fils became the largest producers of watches in Switzerland, with a production rate of of over , watches per year. During this period, they continued to make significant innovations, like the minute-repeating wristwatch, developed in in partnership with Audemars Piguet, and quite likely the first wristwatch of its kind.
Both Brandt brothers died in , placing the fate of the company in the control of four descendants, the oldest of whom, Paul-Emile Brandt, was only 23 years of age. SSIH eventually became the third largest producers of finished watches and movements in the world. We have often said that when buying with a view to an increase in value in the future, it is wise to choose models that are in someway different from the majority. These might have an unusual dial, case or movement, but some kind of genuinely rare feature will always add to their desirability in the eyes of the collector. This watch is exceptional because the dial, case and movement are all interesting and worthy of comment.
We have never seen this same model before and would guess that very few were manufactured with this strange specification in the first instance. When we encounter a watch in 14 karat gold, we tend to assume, quite reasonably, that this was sold when new in the USA. While 9 and 18 karat gold are the purity standards traditionally used in the UK and Europe, 10 and 14 karat grades are the norm in America.
The Swiss houses dodged this duty by shipping only uncased movements, which were not subject to the tax due on complete watches, to their American agents who, in turn, then fitted them into locally produced cases. Today, when we find a 14 karat gold vintage watch, close examination of its case will almost always reveal that it was manufactured in the USA for intended retail sale there.
